The winter high school sports season kicks into gear in the next few days, when most of the county’s teams play their season openers.
But a handful of teams jumped the gun and started playing games that count on Thursday. Those games produced the usual assortment of standout performances.
No one had a better week than Mount Everett junior Michael Ullrich.
On Thursday, he scored 26 points in a three-point win over Ware in the opening round of Franklin Tech’s Eagle Holiday Classic.
Twenty-four hours later, Ullrich scored 12 as the Eagles beat McCann Tech to claim Mount Everett’s first title at the season-opening invitational since 2014.
Mount Everett stays busy this week with its home-opener on Monday against the Pioneer Valley Christian Immersion Charter School and a shorter road trip on Thursday to Westfield to face St. Mary’s
The McCann Tech hockey team debuted on Friday and got solid performances from junior goaltender Abby Fuls on back-to-back nights.
In the road opener, Fuls stopped 33 shots in a 3-1 loss. On Saturday at the Peter W. Foote Vietnam Veterans Memorial Rink, she made 15 saves to backstop the Hornets to a 5-2 win over Mount Everett.
“We have a lot of confidence [in Fuls],” McCann Tech senior David Delisle said after the win. “She’s a really good goalie. She’s been with me since youth league. I know how she plays, and she can step up. She can do a lot.”
McCann Tech is home again on Wednesday when it faces the Taconic at 7:30 p.m.
