Athlete of the Week: Shane Fuller
Shane Fuller was certainly not one of the biggest athletes on the court in Saturday's Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase, but few made as big a contribution to their teams' successes.
The McCann sophomore scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had four steals in the Hornet's first win of the year, a 54-44 triumph over Mount Everett at Massachusett's College of Liberal Arts' Amsler Campus Center.
Fuller made some key plays down the stretch, including a steal on one end of the court and a transition lay-in on the other with two minutes, 20 seconds left in regulation to cap a 7-0 run for the Hornets that put the game away.
"Shane was tremendous," McCann head coach Mike Nykorchuck said. "That kid's got a giant heart. He came off the bench, and I'll tell you, I don't know if we win that game today without him.
"Shane is the shortest kid on the team, and he's always among our top rebounders. He just has a nose for the ball, and, like I tell the other guys: Shane wait for the ball to come to him. Shane goes and gets the ball."
Fuller scored nine points and had all four of his steals in the decisive second half for the Hornets, who are home this week against Franklin Tech on Monday and Westfield Vocational on Thursday.
