Bird Leads Drury Boys to Senior Night Win
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Hayden Bird scored 14 points in a big comeback win for the Blue Devils, 50-44, over Wahconah Friday night.
It was a quiet game for Bird from the floor, but he was able to step up and knock down free throws when the team needed it the most. He went 10-10 from the line in the fourth quarter.
Connor Meehan chipped in with 10 and Chad Lawrence had six on two big 3-pointers.
The Drury Blue Devils (11-8) looked sluggish in the first half. Drury went down, 12-2, to start the game, and it seemed like halftime couldn't come soon enough. Wahconah really worked the ball inside and grabbed a 26-18 lead. After the break Drury settled into the game and chipped away at the lead. It was the fourth quarter that lit a match under the Blue Devils, as they went on a 11-0 run to start. The Blue Devils pressure started to mount into turnovers.
"We wanted to pressure the whole game," said coach Racette. "We really dug in in the second half when we had to. The pressure kind of got to them."
For Wahconah (7-12), Cole Morrison had 10 points and Brandon Roughley put in eight.
Wahconah took the first meeting between these two and needed this win to have any hopes of playoff basketball.
On a day of early celebration for the Drury seniors it looked as though it may not end that way. One key aspect for Drury was foul shots late in the game. They shot 24-26 at the line and really separated themselves late.
"We talked about it: Rebounding and making foul shots are our two biggest Achilles heels, and we did a decent job of that at the end" Racette said.
Drury will go on the road and play Wednesday against Taconic, while Wahconah will play Monday against Lee.
