Hoosac Valley, Drury Girls, Boys Get Wins at Jamboree

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Hoosac Valley and Drury each took home a pair of wins from the Bucky Bullett Jamboree high school basketball scrimmages on Tuesday.

 

The annual pre-season event pits the boys and girls basketball teams from all four North County schools in their final tune-up before the regular season gets underway later this week.

 

Girls

Hoosac Valley 40, Mount Greylock 10

 

Hanna Shea and Maryn Cappiello each hit a 3-pointer in an early 12-1 run to set the tone in this one.

 

The Hurricanes’ stifling defense allowed just two field goals for the Mounties in the first half – a pull-up from the foul line by Tanley Drake and a drive on the baseline by Phoebe Barnes.

 

And Hoosac Valley took a 24-8 lead into half-time of the 20-minute scrimmage when Emma Meczywor closed the half with back-to-back buckets.

 

The ‘Canes then opened the second half with a 13-0 run to close the deal. Cappiello got it started with another 3, and Geneveieve Lagess scored six straight points during the decisive spurt.

 

Hoosac Valley is off until next Tuesday when it travels to Westhampton to face Hampshire Regional.

 

Mount Greylock gets an early jump on the regular season on Thursday, taking on Mount Everett in the first round of the Franklin Tech Holiday Tournament.

 

Boys

Hoosac Valley 62, Mount Greylock 26

 

Adan Wicks scored in transition midway through the first half to cap an early 19-4 run for the Hurricanes, who went on to take a commanding 30-9 lead into the break on Trevor Moynihan’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer.

 

It was 37-11 early in the second half before Mount Greylock made a run.

 

Desmond Cobb drove to the basket to snap a 12-0 Hoosac run that spanned the first and second half. Then Cobb got an and-one on a putback. Mason Canata later hit a 3 to get Mount Greylock within 21 points at 40-19.

 

But Frank Field scored seven straight for the Hurricanes to make it a 28-point margin with 3 minutes, 11 seconds left to play.

 

Down the stretch, Wicks scored his team’s last 15 points – including three straight 3-pointers, as the Hurricanes pulled away for the 36-point win.

 

The Hurricanes open the season at home on Thursday against Lenox.

 

Mount Greylock starts the year on Monday in Vermont against Brattleboro.

 

Boys

Drury 28, McCann Tech 20

 

The night’s most competitive scrimmage saw the host Blue Devils roar back from a seven-point half-time deficit.

 

McCann Tech built that lead with a 12-2 run to close the first half.

 

Kyle Rougeau got things started for the Hornets with a bucket to cut into a three-point Drury lead, and Jacob Howland hit a 3-pointer to give McCann Tech a 9-7 lead. Rougeau later capped the run with a triple to make it 16-9, Hornets at the break.

 

Drury came out of the half with a 13-0 run to take control for good.

 

Sam Moorman scored twice in that stretch, which also saw Jorge Bond knock down a triple to make it 21-16. 

 

After Howland drove for a bucket for the Hornets to snap the run, Drury scored the next six on 3-pointers from Myles Beauchamp and James Varellas to take a 10-point margin at 28-18.

 

And the Blue Devils’ defense did the rest.

 

Drury opens the regular season at home on Friday against Wahconah.

 

McCann Tech is off until next Tuesday, when it goes on the road to face Pioneer Valley Christian Academy.

 

Girls

Drury 34, McCann Tech 8

 

The Hornets’ Brooke Reynolds scored in the post midway through a low-scoring first half to make it an 8-4 game in favor of Drury.

 

The Blue Devils then put the pedal down.

 

Drury’s pressure defense gave McCann Tech fits in a 17-0 run that took just 2 minutes, 17 seconds and left the Blue Devils with an insurmountable 25-4 advantage.

 

Jacinta Felix left her mark all over the decisive run, scoring four points off turnovers and setting up Ashlyn Hayden for two of her four buckets during the run.

 

Brooke Bishop capped things with an assist from Isabella Moore with 55 seconds left in the half.

 

Whitney Tatro finally scored in the post for the Hornets with 21 seconds left, but Moore added two more for Drury to make it 27-6 at half-time.

 

The Blue Devils will look to carry its defensive intensity into Tuesday’s regular season opener at Agawam.

 

McCann Tech also starts the season on Tuesday with a trip to Mohawk Trail.
