Drury Is County's Top Boys Basketball Seed
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Every winter brings an all-Berkshire County playoff game or two at some point during the Western Mass tournaments.
The only one we know for sure comes Tuesday night when No. 13 Hoosac Valley (10-10) visits No. 4 Wahconah (15-5) in the first round of the Division 3 tourney.
"Round 3 against Hoosac," Wahconah coach Dustin Belcher said after the seeds were released Saturday at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum. "That's kind of what we thought going in. It should be fun and good for Berkshire County basketball."
Wahconah enters the game having won five of its last six, including last Tuesday's regular season finale at Hoosac Valley, a 56-42 Wahconah win.
The victory evened the series after the Hurricanes won in a 55-54 squeaker in Dalton back on Jan. 22.
"They're a good team, for a 13 seed, they're a very good team," Belcher said. "They have some really good players.
"For us, it's going to be about focusing on ourselves and what we have to do to make ourselves successful. We're going to put a lot of our energy more on us than them in preparing for the game."
Four county teams earned spots in the D3 boys bracket.
No. 6 Monument Mountain (15-5) is home on Tuesday against No. 11 Palmer (11-9).
No. 9 Mount Greylock (14-6) travels to play No. 8 Greenfield (13-7) for the right to face top-seeded Narragansett in the quarter-finals.
The top-seeded boys team from Berkshire County is in Division 2, where Drury (13-7) pulled down the second seed and a first-round bye.
The Blue Devils Friday will host a sectional quarter-final against either No. 10 Franklin Tech (14-6) or No. 7 Turners Falls (10-10), who meet Tuesday evening in Montague.
On the other side of the bracket, Lenox (12-8) is seeded fifth and home on Tuesday against No. 12 Westfield Tech (9-9).
Defending Division 2 champion Taconic (16-4) is seeded third in the seven-team D2 bracket. It will host No. 6 Belchertown (9-11) on Friday night.
Looming down the road is a potential semi-final rematch with Longmeadow, who lost to Taconic in Pittsfield by four points on Feb. 1.
