NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Drury boys basketball team took care of business at home, against Hopkins with a 60-51 win on Friday night. 

 

Drury (12-4), coming off its third game in five nights, had its work cut out for them to start this one as Hopkins looked to get a little payback for their loss at home earlier in the season. After getting a couple early baskets, Drury allowed Hopkins to jump out to their biggest lead of the night with a 14-1 run. With a short bench and three games this week it wasn’t a surprise the Blue Devils looked a little gassed early on. 

 

“We had three games this week and you could see it,”  Drury coach Jack Racette said. “We came out a little lethargic to start the game, but we turned it around in the second quarter, but we were tired for sure.”

 

In the second quarter, Drury turned it up a notch on both ends of the floor starting with back to back threes from Miles Beauchamp who finished the game with nine points. Dante Dillard strung a few baskets together in the quarter as well giving him a team-high 16 points. Sammy Moorman finished with 13 of his own, mainly in the second half, and Jorge Bond added 12.

 

Drury looked like they got their second wind in the second quarter, holding Hopkins to just eight points. They had an 11-0 run late in the half and took that momentum right into the locker room. 

 

Drury continued to make its mark on the game, only this time it was inside the paint. Sammy Moorman had eight in the quarter all in quick succession to help stretch the lead for the Blue Devils. All his points came from the blocks and it really opened up other avenues for Drury to score, including kick outs to open 3s. It was the inside out game that helped Drury keep their lead and in a game with tired legs It was just the type of quarter they needed. 

 

“We were settling in the first half, I don’t think Sammy had a basket in the first half,” Racette said. “We need to play inside out to open up shots for our three, Sammy made a great pass in the third quarter across the court to Beauchamp and it just stretches the defense for us.”

 

Drury went back and forth with Hopkins in the fourth quarter, trading baskets early on, but never seemed to be in any real trouble since they took the lead early in the second quarter. 

 

Drury will look to get some rest before they take on the undefeated Monument Mountain Spartans (16-0) on Tuesday night.
