WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Mount Greylock boys basketball team Tuesday got some revenge on Palmer with a 70-50 win in the first round of the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament.
Toby Foehl led all scorers with 22 points, including six 3-pointers.
Sam Dils was able to turn his defense into offense, scoring a few easy buckets off turnovers to give himself 15 points, while Sean McCormack added 13.
It was a rematch of last year’s Western Mass Finals, which saw Palmer (10-11) crowned champions. This year, the Mounties had different plans and were not ready to end their title run just yet. The game started off with a quick 6-0 run for Palmer mainly due to effort plays and offensive rebounding. Dylan Tenczar led the way for Palmer on the night, scoring 15 points. Mount Greylock (15-6) started to settle in late in the first quarter, taking a 13-10 lead after one.
“The bottom line is you have to rebound, we can’t give a kid like Tenczar those chances,” Mount Greylock coach Bob Thistle said. “He was all over the place he had 12 or 13 and on track to score 25-30 points, so we had to make some adjustments.”
That is exactly what the Mounties did. After leading at the break, 29-27, they came out in the second half on fire, outscoring Palmer 25-14. Dils scored back-to-back baskets to give them a 40-34 lead. From that point it was all Mount Greylock as they continued to extend their lead with high pressure and defensive turnovers.
“That’s a senior leader,” Thistle said. “This is a kid who has taken us to the Cage back-to-back years as a guard and he made some tough layups in traffic. That pushed us up four or five and we kept going from their.”
Mount Greylock never let Palmer get comfortable in the second half and the scoreline showed. The Mounties will go on to face Sabis, a team they beat earlier in the season.
