Pittsfield's Perkett,Pierce, Tobin Make College Commitments
PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Three Pittsfield High School senior softball players officially committed to their respective collegiate academic and athletic programs at a signing ceremony at the school on Thursday.
Hayley Tobin, Britney Perkett, and Giuliana Pierce each has been offered an opportunity to continue her softball career at the college level. The trio serve as catalysts for a strong Generals team that has been a dominant force in recent years in the Berkshire County and Western Massachusetts region.
A four-year starter for the Generals, Tobin has a career batting average of over .500. A two-time All-Western Massachusetts First Team honoree, Tobin eclipsed the prestigious 100-career hit plateau as a junior. A strong defender behind the plate, she backs up her offensive production by being a catcher that limits the opposing team’s running game and demonstrating a tremendous rapport with the pitching staff.
Perkett, a four-year starting outfielder for Pittsfield High, made a name for herself as a speedy lead-off hitter and an effective-slap hitter. A 2017 All-Western Mass First Team honoree, Perkett entered the 2018 season with 90 hits, 75 runs scored, and a batting average close to .400 for her career and passed the 100-hit mark earlier this week.
Pierce, another 2017 All-Western Mass First team honoree, continues the school’s tradition of strong pitching. The Generals' ace threw more than 150 innings in 2017, picking up 20 wins and helping lead the team to the Western Mass Division 1 Championship game. She averages close to a strikeout per inning in the circle and prides herself on having great command and keeping opposing hitters off balance.
Under eighth-year head coach Greg Marchbanks, all three players are having continued success in the early stages of the 2018 season.
Tobin has committed to continue her academic and athletic career at Stonehill College in Easton. Stonehill is an NCAA Division II school that plays in the Northeast-10 Conference against league opponents such as Bentley, Merrimack, Saint Rose, AIC, and Le Moyne.
Perkett has committed to continue her academic and athletic career at UMASS-Boston, an NCAA Division III school that plays in the Little East Conference. UMASS-Boston takes on league opponents such as Plymouth State, Southern Maine, Eastern Connecticut, and Keene State.
Pierce has committed to continue her academic and athletic career at Assumption College, another NCAA Division II school that plays in the Northeast-10 Conference. It’s quite likely that Pierce and Tobin will face each other when their respective colleges play each other over the next few years.
"We’re extremely proud of our program, and excited for what the future will bring for these three student-athletes,” Marchbanks said. “Hayley, Britney, and Giuliana have a passion for the game. Their hard work and dedication puts our team in a position to be successful, but it also put them in a position that created personal opportunities for themselves.”
