Koffi Homers Twice, but Mount Greylock Falls to Norfolk Aggie
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Mount Greylock softball team Friday scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh and got the tying run to the plate before falling to Norfolk Aggie, 20-17, in the first round of the Division 5 State Tournament.
Malia Koffi went 3-for-4 with a grand slam, a two-run homer and a double for the 15th-seeded Mounties, who pounded out 19 hits and battled from behind all afternoon.
Norfolk Aggie (17-4) opened the game with a three-run rally.
But Mount Greylock answered right away. After Mila Marcisz reached on an error, Koffi lifted a ball over the left field fence for her first homer of the day.
With two-out, Kelsey MacHaffie singled to left, and she came all the way around to score on Madi Barber’s single to make it 3-0.
The Rams then rallied for seven in the second to take the lead for good.
Madi MacLeod hit a grand slam in the middle of that rally, which saw Norfolk Aggie go on top, 10-3.
After a rare 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the second for Rams pitcher Tessa Mainyk, her offense gave her a 12-3 cushion.
She needed it against the high-scoring Mounties.
Mount Greylock got three runs in the third, an RBI double from A.J. Pelkey in the fourth and Koffi’s slam in the fifth to get within a run at 13-12.
But the Rams used four hits and five walks in the sixth to push their lead to 19-12.
It was a 20-12 margin going to the bottom of the seventh, but Mount Greylock kept fighting.
With one out, Marcisz singled to right to start a rally that saw Pelkey, Kayleigh Jaros, MacHaffie and Vayda Larabee each drive in a run.
But with runners at first and second and two out, Mainyk got a fly ball to center field to end the game.
Mount Greylock ends its season with a record of 9-12.
Norfolk Aggie moves on to the Round of 16 to face the winner of Monday’s game between second-seeded Turners Falls and the winner of a Saturday play-in between Academy of Notre Dame and Atlantis Charter.
