Elena Iovieno Leads Wahconah into Sweet 16

DALTON, Mass. – Elena Iovieno went 3-for-4 with a double Monday to lead the Wahconah softball team to an 11-0 win over Lynnfield in the first round of the Division 4 State Tournament.

 

Avery Vale-Cruz struck out 17 in a four-hitter as Wahconah bounced back from last week’s heart-breaking loss in the Western Mass finals.

 

Emma Belcher, Dani Barry and Taylar Hickey each had a pair of hits. Barry also drove in a pair of runs.

 

Wahconah got all the offense Vale-Cruz needed in the second inning, when Hickey singled and eventually came home on an RBI single by Olivia Iovieno.

 

Third-seeded Wahconah (20-2) advances to the Sweet 16, where it will host No. 14 Millbury on Tuesday at 5:30 at Pine Grove Park.
