Devoti, Eagles Hold on Late, Advance in States

SHEFFIELD, Mass. – Julia Devoti struck out the potential tying run in top of the seventh to end the game and give the Mount Everett softball team an 8-6 win over Mystic Valley in the Division 5 State Tournament on Sunday.

 

The Eagles built a 6-0 lead through five innings, but the visitors put the pressure on late, scoring three in the sixth and three more in the seventh before Devoti was able to close the door.

 

Emma Goewey went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs to lead Mount Everett offensively. Lexi Tomascak and Aliyah Creamer each went 1-for-3, and Devoti helped her cause with a hit and a couple of walks.

 

In the circle, Devoti struck out six.

 

Mount Everett (10-11) advances to face third-seeded West Boylston in the Round of 32 in the state tourney.

 

“I told the girls to just go out today and have fun, be glad we had the opportunity to play another day and just enjoy the ride,” Mount Everett coach Joshua King said. “We have a quick turnaround with us traveling to No. 3 West Boylston 4 p.m. [on Monday] so hopefully we can jump out early tomorrow and just play smart clean softball.”
