McCann Drops Opener to Easthampton
NORTH ADAMS, Mass — A slow start cost the McCann Tech softball team, which gave up five runs in the top of the first inning on its way to a 13-7 defeat to Easthampton in the Hornets' season opener on Wednesday.McCann wasn't as sharp as it needed to be, both from the circle and on the defense. The Hornets made five errors in the field, while senior Erika Ziemba struggled in her first start of the year, allowing nine earned runs on 16 hits to take the loss. Ziemba struck out three and walked three in her first start taking over for the departed Katlyn Haring, who won nine games for McCann a season ago.
The Hornets' offense showed some positive signs despite the defeat. After falling behind 8-1 after the top of the second inning, McCann got itself back into the game with four runs in the bottom half of the frame. Ziemba, senior Brittany Briggs and sophomores Jessica Sunn and Jordan Prevey each had two hits on the day, with Ziemba and Prevey leading the way with two RBI apiece.
The Hornets are back in action on Thursday with a road game at Lee at 4 p.m.
