HATFIELD, Mass. -- Cheyenne Alcombright went 4-for-5 with a triple, a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in to lead the McCann Tech softball team to an 18-9, come-from-behind win over Smith Academy on Monday afternoon.

The Hornets were down 7-1 after one inning, but went back on top with seven runs in the second.

"Being our first time outside on a field felt great," McCann coach Kate Galli said. "It's been a tough spring, and we have been confined to the gym, so we were definitely excited to play a game.

"I like how we stay positive and supported one another and kept plugging along to get ahead and stay ahead.

"Our defense looked good, only committing one error. And we communicted well."

Jordan Prevey went 2-for-5 with four RBIs, and Jess Sunn went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs. Freshman Alanza Quinones went 3-for-4 with a home run.

Olivia Esoldi was 3-for-4, and Jordan Owensby and Danielle Gibeau had two hits apiece.

McCann starting picher Haley Malloy had a rough outing, failing to get out of the first, but Owensby came on to strike out nine, walk none and scatter seven hits through 6-1/3.

"It's a nice position to be in with some flexibility coming off the bench," Galli said.

McCann (1-0) hosts Gateway on Wednesday.
