Hornets Can't Handle Indians' Shader
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The McCann Tech softball team had no answer for Ware starter Veronica Shader, who allowed just three hits in a complete-game 8-1 win for the Indians on Friday. The senior hurler struck out eight batters and didn't give up a single walk in handing the Hornets (1-8) their sixth loss in a row. Shader's lone blemish was surrendering an RBI to sophomore Jessica Sunn in the bottom of the fourth inning. That scored senior Brittany Briggs, who reached base with a single earlier in the inning.
"Once again, we faced a stellar pitcher and couldn't put runs on the board," McCann head coach Robin Finnegan said. "Defensively, we played well for five innings. Softball is truly all about the pitching. We need to play absolutely flawless defense if we can only score a couple of runs a game."
Senior Erika Ziemba was also effective in the circle for the Hornets, giving up four earned runs on six hits in a complete-game effort. Four McCann errors allowed Ware to do some damage in both the second and sixth innings, where the visitors plated three runs apiece in those two frames.
The Hornets next play Holyoke Catholic on the road at 4 p.m. on Monday.
