Errors Cost Hornets In Loss To Rams
SOUTHWICK, Mass — The McCann Tech softball team had a day to forget on Wednesday, making seven errors on its way to a 13-1 loss at Southwick. Both the Hornets (1-5) and the Rams (4-2) finished the day with seven hits, but it was McCann's sloppiness in the field that allowed the hosts to score seven runs in the second inning. Southwick collected four more runs in the next two frames combined, putting the visitors in an 11-0 hole. Hornets' starter Erika Ziemba struck out one and walked six in five innings of work to take the loss. Of the 11 runs she gave up, only two of them were earned.
"This was a tough loss against a very beatable team," McCann head coach Robin Finnegan said. "Again, we came out flat and our defense was nonexistent, along with our bats. There's not much to say here except we didn't come to play, and Southwick made us pay for it. We're still staying positive and hope we can find a way to turn things around on Friday against a good Monson team."
Ziemba did have a solid day with the bat, going 2-for-3 to lead the Hornets' offense. Lindsay Wilcox paced the Rams with two hits and three RBI, while teammates Kendra Bowe, Jenn Yelin and Sarah Crosby each finished with two RBIs.
Jordyn Willey went the distance for Southwick, allowing one earned run and one walk while striking out five. McCann next hosts Monson at 11 a.m. on Friday.
