McCann Lets One Get Away Against Gateway

NORTH ADAMS, Mass — The McCann Tech softball team had a nice, little win in its grasp, but a poor sixth inning allowed Gateway to score seven runs on its way to a 12-8 win on the road on Monday. The Hornets overcame a five-run deficit after the second inning by combining to score seven times over the third and fourth frames, but they couldn't seal the deal on a day when they made three errors and allowed seven base on balls.

"We let this one get away," McCann head coach Robin Finnegan said. "Poor defense and too many walks did us in. We had a slow start after a long delay to start the game. We hit well enough to win but didn't play defense well. We need to find a way to get motivated and mentally prepared to play seven innings of softball. We are much better than our record indicates."

The Hornets (1-4) fell behind 4-0 after the first inning and trailed 5-0 when their bats started catching fire. Senior Jamie LeTourneau went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI for McCann, while classmate Erika Ziemba added a double, two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Senior Brittany Briggs and sophomore Jessica Sunn each chipped in with pair of hits and one run batted in.

Brooke Farmann went the distance to pick up the win for the Gators, allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits, striking out six and walking three. Ziemba took the loss for the Hornets, giving up eight earned runs on nine hits. She struck out three but averaged a walk per inning in her complete-game performance.

McCann next plays at Southwick at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
