Pittsfield Girls Down Springfield Central
PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Sierra Murray scored five goals and set up a sixth on Friday to lead the Pittsfield/Taconic girls lacrosse team to a 16-4 win over Springfield Central.
It was the Generals’ fourth win of the season and second in their last three games -- both against the Golden Eagles.
While Pittsfield (4-7) endured a five-game winning streak prior beating Central on Tuesday, coach Jeff Murray’s team has been competitive all year, with losses by one goal at Chicopee ad by two goals at Lee, not to mention a 7-2 loss at Wahconah on Wednesday.
“They’re doing well,” Murray said. “We’ve got a lot of younger kids who are improving and stepping up. A number of them played and did well today.
“Despite the score, it was a tough game. It was a tough, physical game. Central doesn’t give up. When we played them a few days ago, it was kind of the same thing. They play for 50 minutes.”
Central keeper Shania Galvez did her share to help keep the Eagles in the game, stopping 15 of the 31 shots she faced.
But Pittsfield was able to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the opening minutes.
Sara Curry got things started before Murray drove down the middle of the Central defense, utilizing a spin move to get herself some space for a goal to make it 2-0.
Moments later, Murray went five-hole on a free position shot to give the Generals a three-goal margin.
Central answered with a pair of goals before Pittsfield scored the next seven to take a 10-2 lead into half-time when Murray set up Marissa Gregory just before the break.
After the Eagles scored the second goal of the first half, Pittsfield ran off five straight to put the game away, the last one a Murray free position goal.
Anna Quinto stopped eight shots to earn the win in goal.
Pittsfield hosts Hoosac Valley on Monday.
