Mount Greylock Girls Top Lee
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- For Lee High girls lacrosse coach Dave Galisa, Monday’s visit to Mount Greylock was as much field trip as road trip for his young squad.
And after the Mounties ran off soggy John T. Allen Field with a 16-4 win, Galisa was upbeat about the experience his team gained against the perennial Berkshire County power.
“Any of these games where we play Greylock or Wahconah or South Hadley, I tell them, ‘Look at what they’re doing,’ “ Galisa said. “Learn from them. Keep hustling, but pick up the little things that Greylock does that we don’t.
“I think the girls picked up a few of those things today. Our next couple of games, we have Hoosac, which is another very good team, and Central, and hopefully they can carry some things into those games and learn a little more.”
Emma Polumbo scored five goals, and Caroline Flynn had a hat trick for Mount Greylock (5-3), which won for the third time in five outings.
Ann Macchi and Shannon Finnegan had a goal and an assist apiece for Lee (0-5-1). Wildcats Nicole Gamberoni and McKenna Hammerle scored a goal apiece.
Mount Greylock coach Lindsey von Holtz said Lee’s improvement is going to help raise the level of competition in the county.
“We keep playing these league games that are getting better, which is fantastic for the sport in the area,” she said. “They have some great athletes this year who are, unfortunately, just learning the game, but they’re picking it up quickly.”
Brook Masse got the scoring started on Monday with a free position goal in the second minute. Clare Sheedy followed less than a minute later to give the Mounties a 2-0 lead. Polumbo scored twice in a row to make it 4-0, six minutes in, and the Mount Greylock lead got to 6-0 before Finnegan got the Wildcats on the board off an assist from Macchi.
Lee will continue its season on Wednesday evening in Adams against Hoosac Valley.
Mount Greylock goes to Pittsfield Wednesday for the second of its three games this week.
