Hoosac Valley Girls Come Back to Top Lee
CHESHIRE, Mass. -- Aubrey Rumbolt scored with three seconds left to give the Hoosac Valley girls lacrosse team an 11-10 come-from-behind win over Lee on Wednesday afternoon.
“I'm very proud of these girls,” Hoosac coach Molly Meczywor said. :Even though we were down, they continued to work hard to get themselves back into the game. Aubrey Rumbolt and Skylar Case, as captains, did a great job on the field of maintaining composure, staying positive and making big plays. Aubrey, again, demonstrated maturity in taking the ball and finishing the game with her shot. This is the second game she's scored the winning goal.”
The Hurricanes trailed, 10-6, with just more than five minutes left when Meryl Phair scored her fifth goal of the game for Lee.
But Hoosac Valley scored the last five.
Ali Mendel got it going with 4 minutes, 33 seconds left. Then Claudia Bresett scored 20 seconds later, and Mendel (four goals, two assists) scored again. Bresett scored to tie it before Rumbolt got the game-winner.
The Wildcats scored the game’s first three goals and took a 5-3 lead into half-time.
“We definitely came out flat, but they moved the ball, won draws and took great open shots,” Meczywor said. “At half-time, we had a conversation about getting back to the fundamentals and running the offense. It took us some time to get into the second half, but once we scored two at the four-minute mark, we completely took over.
“Defensive efforts by Bri Lancia, Paige Barrow, Chloe Martel and Skylar Case thwarted Lee attacks and they worked hard to win every ground ball.”
Bresett scored three goals, and Abid Disbrow made 11 saves to earn the win in goal.
Hoosac Valley (4-2) travels to play Wahconah on Friday.
Lee (2-3) hosts Mount Greylock on Friday.
