Local Matchups Abound in Girls, Boys Lax Tourneys
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Mount Greylock's boys lacrosse team was seeded third in the Central/Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament, and the school's girls team was seeded third in D2, according to brackets released Friday by the MIAA.
The Hoosac Valley girls, who earned their first tournament berth just a year ago, will play their first tournament home game against a county rival. And the McCann Tech boys make their program's tournament debut against the most successful team in Berkshire County.
The Mounties (14-4) are the highest seeded boys team among five from Berkshire County in the 14-team field.
Mount Greylock will host No. 14 McCann Tech (10-7) in the first round of the tourney with the winner advancing to face either No. 6 Hoosac Valley (13-3) or No. 11 Lee (10-7).
The Hurricanes will host the Wildcats in the first round. Hoosac Valley owns a pair of wins over Lee already this spring: 12-4 at Lee in April and 10-7 under the lights at Renfrew on May 2.
No. 7 Wahconah (14-4) earned a home game in the first round and will take on No. 10 Belcherstown (13-3). The winner of that game will take on No. 2 Nipmuc (14-4) in the quarter-finals.
Nipmuc and top-seeded East Longmeadow (17-1) each received a bye through the first round of the boys D3 tourney.
In the 16-team girls Division 2 bracket, everyone plays in the first round.
Mount Greylock (13-6) will hosts Hudson (9-9) for the right to face either No. 7 Oakmont (11-5) or No. 10 Lunenburg (11-7) in the quarters.
Hoosac Valley (13-3) earned the tournament's sixth-seed and will be home in the first round against No. 11 Wahconah (10-10) in Round 3 of their rivalry.
In the regular season, the Hurricanes won both meetings by scores of 6-5 and 7-2.
The winner of the latest rematch will move on to play either No. 3 Nipmuc (13-5) or No. 14 Advanced Math & Science (8-6) in the quarter-finals.
MIAA policy is to allow a 24-hour appeal period for teams to question their records as used in calculating seeds before the brackets become official.
