Hurricanes Cruse to 5-0 Mark
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Hoosac Valley boys lacrosse team Friday continued its early season dominance with a 14-0 win over McCann Tech.
Carson Meczywor scored five goals and set up three more, and Luke Waterman had a hat trick as the Hurricanes improved to 5-0 this spring.
Hoosac Valley has outscored its opponents by a combined margin of 81-5, and Friday marked its second shutout of the young season.
“It’s a blessing to have the seniors that have,” Hoosac Valley coach Jacob Anderson-Hall said. “The co-op that we have with the Mount Greylock and the Drury kids, we got some really solid players from them. It’s been a fun season so far.
“Some of these kids have been playing with us since they were in eighth grade. It’s nice to see how far they’ve come and how they’ve truly progressed through their lacrosse skills and leadership.”
Senior Meczywor set the tone early, getting a natural hat trick on the first three scores of the game. The Hurricanes went on to get goals from Waterman and Kobe Valois to lead, 5-0, at the end of the first quarter.
It was 8-0 at half-time, and by the fourth quarter, mostly run under running time, the Hurricanes’ reserves got plenty of time to work on their game.
Matt Tassone needed to make one save as he and Will Broadwell combined on the shutout win.
At the other end, Rylie Fortini made nine saves for the Hornets. Eric Rougeau stopped one of the two shots he faced when he was pressed into service in the third quarter while Fortini was serving a penalty.
McCann Tech dropped to 2-3 with the loss, and coach Marshall Maxwell knew it would be a tall order to get over the .500 mark against an experienced Hoosac Valley squad.
“I just watched them in the [post-game] handshake, and three quarters of their team is a helmet taller than what we have,” Maxwell said of his young squad. “But the future is bright. We have good numbers. I want to say we have 26 or 27 in the program. … Young guys, a lot of guys who haven't had lacrosse stick in their hands before. It was good to give them some exposure today and build for the future.
“We’re right where we belong in our league. We’ll be competitive. Today was just a tough one to recover from after Lenox [on Thursday].”
The Hornets battled the Millionaires (5-0) to a 7-4 decision. Lenox is the next test for Hoosac Valley as the unbeaten teams get a showdown on Thursday at Berkshire Community College.
“We’ve been keeping our eye on them,” Anderson-Hall said. “They’re definitely going to be physical. They’re going to want to beat us, and I hope our guys feel the same.
“It’s going to be a good lacrosse game, a good, physical lacrosse game. That’s gonna be a fun game to play.”
