Mount Anthony Rallies Past Hoosac Valley in Second Half

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- A 3-0 third period proved to be too much for the Hoosac Valley boys lacrosse team to overcome on Friday night.

 

Mount Anthony Union’s Jeff Potter scored two of his team-high four goals in that period to break a 5-5 half-time tie and send the Patriots on to a 10-8 win on snowy Shewcraft Field at MCLA.

 

It was the second loss in two outings this season for the Hurricanes -- both against squads from Vermont.

 

But it was considerably more competitive than the Hurricanes’ season opener at Burr & Burton. While Hoosac coach Mark Harrington saw plenty of things that his team can improve, he recognized that it’s a long season, and Hoosac Valley still controls its own destiny.

 

“We just made too many mistakes,” he said. “We’re dropping passes, making bad decisions on cuts to the ball. It’s just stuff we’ve got to correct.

 

“The goal is to get in the playoffs. … We’ve got a lot of young kids playing, freshmen and sophomores. We just have to correct our mistakes and keep getting better and shoot for the playoffs.”

 

Hoosac (0-2) jumped out to an early lead, building on the momentum of a dramatic 6-5 win by the school’s girls team in the first half of Friday’s double-header.

 

Nate Haley converted a Carson Meczywor assist for the game’s first goal in the fifth minute. Less than a minute later, Lukie Waterman gave the Hurricanes a two-goal advantage.

 

Waterman set up Haley to make it 3-1 in the final minute of the first.

 

But the Patriots rallied to tie it at the break.

 

MAU scored kthree of the first four in the second quarter to make it 4-4, but Haley (four goals) scored with help from Casey Meczywor to give the Hurricanes what turned out to be their last lead, 5-4.

 

Potter scored late in the half to draw Mount Anthony even.

 

A two-minute, locked-in penalty against Hoosac Valley midway through the third quarter allowed Mount Anthony to do major damage.

 

The Patriots scored two man-up goals on the opportunity to go ahead 7-5, and it was a three-goal lead going to the fourth.

 

It was still a three-goal margin in the final seconds when Haley scored his fourth goal.

 

Casey Meczywor had a hat trick, and Brady Larkin made seven saves for the Hurricanes.

 

Hoosac Valley goes to Glens Falls, N.Y., on Saturday before opening Berkshire County play on Tuesday at Lee.
