MONSON, Mass. -- Zavier Martin-Levesque scored a big goal at the end of the first half, and Keegan Dellaghelfa stopped five third-quarter shots to help the McCann Tech boys lacrosse win its season-opener, 9-1, at Monson on Monday.

“The last-second goal by Zavier Martin-Levesque was a big momentum goal for us,” Hornets coach Paul Lange said. “It took some of the win out of their sails and pumped our guys up going into half-time, as last-second goals tend to do.”

McCann Tech took a 6-0 lead into half-time, and Dellaghelfa preserved that shutout through the third quarter.

“Keegan Dellaghelfa finished with eight saves -- five in the third quarter, which obviously was a time when Monson could have come back and made it a much closer game,” Lange said. “Keegan stepped up as a freshman in his first game in goal.”
Sophomore Darius Tovani also stepped up in a big way.

“He played a complete game,” Lange said. “He was strong on defense, did well on offense. He worked hard on faceoffs and got to a lot of ground balls.”

Tovani finished with one goal.

Darian Tovani scored twice, including the first goal of the season for the Hornets. Matt Dellaghelfa scored twice, as did Martin-Levesque. Brandon Sargent and Colby Ghidotti each had a goal, and Javen Reinhardt registered two assists.

Joe Angelica scored, and Max Jordan made seven saves for the Mustangs.

McCann Tech goes to Belchertown on Wednesday.
