PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Jason Codey struck out nine, and Morrie Fried went 2-for-3 with a triple Tuesday to lead the Pittsfield High baseball team to a 6-1 win over Wahconah at Wahconah Park in the Western Massachusetts Class B title game.
Codey allowed just one unearned run, and it came in the top of the first inning, when Braedyn Melle, who led off the game with a single, came home when James Rabuse reached on an error.
Codey closed the door from there, scattering three more hits and walking none to improve to 4-0 and lower his earned run average to .530 this spring.
His offense picked him up right away with three runs in the bottom of the first.
Ben Jacob led off with a single and stole second and third before coming home on a pitch that got to the backstop.
Nick Brindle walked and scored on Fried’s triple to make it 2-1, Generals.
Fried then came home on a Roshan Warriar sacrifice fly to give PHS a two-run lead.
“Pitching wise, [Codey] threw beautifully,” Pittsfield coach Drew Pearce said. “And, hitting-wise, we stayed on them. We answered big after a couple of errors in that first inning. We made a few later, but they didn’t cost us because [Codey] locked it down.
“Overall, we played well enough to win and beat a very good and well-coached team in Wahconah.”
Pittsfield tacked on runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings.
Jake Duquette went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Brindle singled and drove in a run for the Generals.
Rabuse and Melle split the pitching duties for Wahconah, striking out six.
Both Pittsfield (16-5) and Wahconah (13-8) will be seeded in the Division 4 State Tournament when the bracket comes out on Friday.
Pittsfield will look to continue the momentum it built in an eight-game winning streak that continued on Tuesday.
“Going into the tournament, we were confident,” Codey said. “We knew we were going to come out with a win. We had no doubt that we might lose any of these games. Going into states, I don’t think there’s anyone who can beat us.”
