SHEFFIELD, Mass. – Matt Lowe and Sean Warren each had a pair of RBIs Friday as the Mount Everett baseball team earned a 6-5 win over Excel Academy in the preliminary round of the Division 5 State Tournament.

“A great game to start the tournament,” Mount Everett coach Dan Lanoue said. “Excel High school is a better team than their seed. I am very proud of our team. We went down, 4-1, in the fifth and answered right back to tie it.”

Trevor Leonard reached base on an error and scored on an error to cut the deficit to 4-2. Warren singled to left to drive in Lowe and Jacob Kreis to tie it.

“In the bottom of the sixth, with one out JJ Schneider and Trevor Leonard walked,” Lanoue said. “Darius Taliaferro then laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases. Matt Lowe then grounded into the hole. The shortstop threw the ball away trying to get the out at second. That error scored two runs.”

Michael Ullrich pitched the top of the seventh, giving up one run but leaving the tying run at third base with a strikeout to end the game.

Heyden Cutlip got the start on the mound for the Eagles and went 5 and two-thirds innings, striking out a pair and allowing one earned run.

Warren took over in the top of the sixth with a runner on base in a 4-4 game and got a swinging third strike to end the inning.
