Pittsfield's Coyne Shuts Out Drury
NORTH ADAMS, Mass -- Jay Coyne pitched a five-hit shutout Monday to lead the Pittsfield baseball team to a 2-0 win over Drury at Joe Wolfe Field.
Coyne allowed just two hits through the first six innings, doing a good job keeping the Blue Devils (0-2) off balance all day long in the Generals’ season-opener.
Pittsfield was able to get on the board in the third inning with a hit from Ian Benoit to bring in Quinn Matthews for the 1-0 lead.
The game went without any runs until the fifth inning, and that run proved to be enough insurance for Coyne.
Carter Matthews singled and scored, and Joe Traversa had an RBI as Pittsfield extended its lead.
Drury saved its best inning for the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff hit by Thaylen Harrison. After he was thrown out at second, Drury would got back-to-back hits and a walk forcing a bases loaded situation. But just like all game Coyne was able to get the out when he needed it most, this time on a comebacker to the mound.
Pittsfield (1-0) will go on to play Sandwich Friday, while Drury will play Granby away on Thursday.
