Mount Greylock Baseball Advances to State Quarter-Final
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Jack Cangelosi and Derek Paris combined on a three-hitter Wednesday to lead the Mount Greylock baseball team into the quarter-finals of the Division 5 State Tournament with a 7-0 win over Mystic Valley on Steve Messina Field.
The Mounties got all the offense they needed in the bottom of the first, when Cangelosi reached on a leadoff walk, and his courtesy runner, Jameson Bayliss, ended up scoring on Landen Jamula’s RBI single.
Mount Greylock scored another run in the first, and then Tyler Santoro silenced the Mounties’ bats for four innings.
“The game was tight though five, but, thankfully, we tacked on a handful in the sixth,” Mount Greylock coach Rick Paris said. “Kids are fired up knowing we have a great shot to do something special this year.”
In that sixth inning, Paris got things going with a leadoff double. Jackson Shelsy hit a sacrifice fly, and Anthony Welch crushed a two-run double to left.
Paris then pitched around a leadoff walk by returning the next three in order – two by strikeout – in the seventh.
He struck out three in two innings of work. Cangelosi K’d seven.
Third-seeded Mount Greylock (19-4) will host the Elite Eight round on Sunday against the winner of Wednesday’s game between Douglas and Bromfield.
“We almost were not able to play the game due to field conditions,” Paris said. “But the grounds crew did an amazing job, and our seniors also came up to the field this morning and worked with them all day to get it done.”
