Mount Greylock Rolls Over Southwick
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Every player for the Mount Greylock baseball team scored Friday, winning 14-4 via mercy rule in the sixth inning against Southwick.
Thomas Martin led the Mounties with three hits and three RBIs, with Anthony Welch also scoring three RBIs on two hits. Mount Greylock Pitcher Jack Cangelosi struck out 12 batters in a complete-game win.
Southwick scored all four of its runs in the first inning, taking an early 4-0 lead to start the game.
The Mounties responded quickly, scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the first.
Mount Greylock coach Rick Paris said he was happy with how the team responded after starting the game down four runs.
"They smacked us in the mouth to start the game, but we came back, and our guys just answered back and scored ten runs in the first inning," he said. "I think it was more of knowing that we had a great pitcher out there. He just struggled at first, didn't leave him pitches up. And we knew we could get runs for him. We're just talking about chipping away at it. And we just said, 'Hey, just worry about one bat at a time, one pitch at a time. Chip away at the lead, and we'll be alright.' “
Both teams remained scoreless in the second and third innings, with Southwick held scoreless the rest of the game. The Mounties scored one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings while scoring two in the sixth to force the mercy rule.
Paris said the team played well against the competition that Southwick brought. He said he knew Southwick had been playing well so far this season.
"Our kids were up the whole game. They were up, and they were fired up for it," he said. "We knew that when we faced this team, they were like 9-1, I think, coming into this game; we were 7-2. So it was a big game. We knew we were right there with them. The teams were evenly matched, pretty good. And we just knew we had to be fired up on our whole field and take advantage of it. And we did."
The Mounties are now 8-2 after the win and will play Wahconah at 1 p.m. Saturday.
