Cangelosi's Pitching, Defense Propel Mount Greylock in Tourney
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Jack Cangelosi struck out 13 and allowed just three hits to pitch the Mount Greylock baseball team past Greenfield, 2-0, on Monday in the first round of the Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament.
“Jack Cangelosi pitched a great game, and his defense behind him was stellar,” Mount Greylock coach Rick Paris said. “Jack struck out 13 and helped his cause in the 7th with a diving catch on the first baseline near home plate.
“Also in the fourth inning with runners on first and second and two outs [Cangelosi] attempted a pickoff at first and David Carey from Greenfield tried to score from third as the throw home from first baseman Jack Gitterman was up the line. Catcher Derek Paris dove back to just get the hand on Carey for the third out and end the threat.”
The seventh-seeded Mounties (10-5) got all the offense Cangelosi needed in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
Derek Paris got things started with a leadoff single to right. He then stole second and moved up on a wild pitch. Another ball to the backstop allowed Paris to score and hitter Landen Jamula to reach base.
Jamula took second on an error and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Jack Gitterman’s sacrifice bunt to make it 2-0.
“Love these kind of games,” Rick Paris said. “You have to play pretty flawless defense and take advantage offensively whenever possible, and we did just that tonight.
“Next stop Taconic. Our kids are excited and confident and ready to go.”
Mount Greylock will be facing reigning Division 3 state champion and second-seeded Taconic (14-0) for the third time this season on Wednesday in Pittsfield. On Monday, Taconic advanced with a 21-1 win over Mohawk Trail.
