WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Jack Cangelosi gave up one hit and one run in four innings of work Saturday to lead the Mount Greylock baseball team to a 12-1 win over Drury.

The Mounties jumped on top early with four unearned runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back on their way to running their record to 7-5 this spring.

“Jack threw really well, and all the pitchers who came in, we just wanted to throw strikes and get some work,” Mount Greylock coach Steve Messina said. “It’s a good win for us, especially after the loss against Lenox the other day. It’s important for us to come back and try to get on the right track here.”

With eight games in 12 days starting Monday at Pittsfield, the Mounties will need all the arms they can get going forward.

After Cangelosi’s day ended on Saturday, Messina got an inning apiece of shutout ball from Billy Galvin, Paul Roeder and Dom Paris.

At the plate, Galvin had a 2-for-4 day with a double and scored a pair of runs.

The Mounties made the most of Drury’s defensive struggles early, when the Blue Devils committed five errors in the first four innings -- and that did not count the three balls that Drury outfielders lost in the sun to turn into doubles.

The game’s first run was typical. Oscar Low reached on an overthrow at first, moved up when Paris reached on an outfield error and scored on a wild pitch.

Mount Greylock tacked on three runs in the second and third innings without the benefit of a hit.

In the fourth, the Mounties pounded out four hits -- the biggest a two-run double off the bat of No. 9 hitter Tyler Canata -- to make it 12-1.

Less than a day after playing a much better game than the 19-3 final score indicated against Pittsfield, Drury was flat for the 1 p.m. matinee on Norm Sweet Field. “Unacceptable,” was the word that Blue Devils coach Pat Boulger used to sum up the afternoon.

Things had looked better two hours earlier when Ben Moulton led off the game with an infield single, moved up on Justyn Cowell’s sacrifice bunt, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Logan Rumbolt.

But that was all the offense Drury could manage. Defensively, the Blue Devils played better late, retiring the Mounties in order in the fifth and sixth innings, but the damage was done.

Drury (1-8) goes to Lenox on Monday.

Mount Greylock Monday is at Pittsfield, an 11-0 winner when the teams met in Williamstown back on May 6.

“This week, we have Pittsfield, Lenox, Taconic and Mount Everett, so it’s going to be a tough week,” Messina said.

“I really like this group. It’s a good group. They work hard. They hustle. They support each other. So it’s a fun group to coach and be around, which makes a big difference. I’m really happy with where they are. We came into the year, and we had to replace eight starters. We didn’t talk about it because it’s an ‘is what it is’ type of deal. And we just kind of went about our business..

“But they’ve played some really good games against some pretty good teams.”
