BOURNE, Mass. – Cooper Gobeil struck out seven and allowed just one earned run in a complete-game effort Wednesday to lead Bourne to a 7-4 win over Mount Greylock in the Division 5 State Tournament Round of 16.

Mason Canata went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in three runs for the Mounties, who outhit the Canalmen, 8-5, but never led in the loss.

“We hit the ball well, but we couldn’t come up with the timely hit,” Mount Greylock coach Derek Paris said. “I believe it was the fifth inning when we left bases loaded with no outs. That was a pivotal point in the game.”

Gobeil got two strikeouts and a ground ball to second to end that threat and preserve a 6-3 lead.

“Their pitcher really came up big for them,” Paris said. “He really pounded the zone today, and their defense came up with a few big plays in key situations.”

Canata was one of three pitchers for the Mounties on Wednesday. They combined to allow six earned runs in the loss.

Tommy Art went 2-for-4 for Mount Greylock, and Jake Newberry doubled.

The defending D5 State Champion Canalmen (5-17), who are seeded 23rd in this year’s field, move on to meet No. 15 Greenfield in Greenfield on Saturday in the state quarter-finals.

Mount Greylock finishes the season with a record of 9-14.

“I’m proud of our guys and the fight they showed,” Paris said. “Hopefully, this fuels them and drives them to want to put the work in this summer and off season to get better.”
