College Collage: Bird Dominates for Franklin Pierce

Franklin Pierce senior Tanner Bird continues to dominate on the mound this spring.

On Sunday, he came out of the bullpen in the first inning and pitched 3-⅔ scoreless to earn the win in a 4-1 victory over Assumption.

Bird, a graduate of Hoosac Valley, has an ERA of .69 in 17 appearances. He has struck out 42 against just eight walks for the Ravens (35-4), who are ranked eighth nationally in Division II.

University at Albany freshman Kevin Donati, a graduate of Pittsfield High, is the Great Danes’ second-leading hitter, batting .331 in 33 games. UAlbany is 16-20 going into Tuesday’s home game against Central Connecticut.

At Burlington, Vt.’s, St. Michael’s College, Mount Greylock graduate Dan Flynn has appeared in 23 of 26 games for the Knights as a freshman. He is hitting .217 with a home run and a pair of triples for a St. Michael’s team that is 2-24 this spring.

Mass Maritime sophomore Justin Nichols, a graduate of Hoosac Valley, has appeared in six games on the mound this spring for the 17-11 Buccaneers.

In men’s lacrosse, Mount Greylock graduate Hank Barrett, a junior at Wesleyan College, has appeared in two games this spring for the Cardinals, who are 9-4 going into Wednesday’s regular season finale against Connecticut College.

The Williams College men also finish their regular season on Wednesday when they travel to Middlebury. Ephs freshman Matt Hogan has appeared in three games at defenseman this spring.

UMass-Dartmouth sophomore Jared Fadding and the Corsairs’ golf team wrapped up its 2015-16 campaign with a seventh-place finish at the Western New England Invitational this month. The Lenox High graduate carded an 82 at the Veterans Memorial Golf Course in Springfield.

Taconic HIgh grad and UMass-Boston sophomore Dominic Nda won the 200 meter dash and picked up two more top-three finishes at Saturday’s Tufts University Sunshine Classic. Nda ran a time of 22.32 seconds in the 200. He ran the second leg on UMass-Boston’s second-place 4-by-100 relay and placed third in the long jump with a mark of 20 feet, 4-½ inches.

Georgetown University junior Scott Carpenter of Lenox ran a personal record and placed 10th in the steeplechase at this weekend’s University of Virginia Challenge. The next stop for the Hoyas is next weekend’s historic Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field.

Wahconah graduate Jaclyn Farrell, a junior at Westfield State, placed seventh in the triple jump to help the Owls finish first at the Springfield College Invitational on Saturday. Farrell’s best mark at the meet was 33 feet, 5-¾ inches.

At the same meet, Mount Greylock graduate Laura Galib, a sophomore at Wheaton College, helped her team finish third out of 14 teams by placing seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1 minute, 13.30 seconds.

Holy Cross senior Elizabeth Provost, a graduate of Hoosac Valley, placed fourth in two events on Saturday to help the Crusaders win the three-team Holy Cross Invitational. Provost placed fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 147-8 and fourth in the discus with a mark of 114-5.

Hartford sophomore Heather Hassett of Monument Mountain ran a personal best in the 1,500 (4:53.05) at the Dartmouth Outdoor Invitational this month. The Hawks are gearing up for the America East Championships May 7 in Burlington, Vt.

Simmons College sophomore and Drury High graduate Cat Record has a 3.69 ERA in 17 appearances in the circle this spring. She has a record of 2-5 for the 12-17 Sharks.

With two games left in the regular season for the conference-tournament bound Babson softball team, senior Catie Benoit, a Mount Greylock graduate, is hitting .400 with three home runs, a pair of doubles and 18 RBIs. The Beavers are 24-11 going into Wednesday’s games against Tufts.

At Becker College, Wahconah graduate and Hawks sophomore Brianna Herforth is hitting .411. Becker finished the regular season 24-10 with a win on Sunday. At 17-1 in the NECC, Becker has a bye in the first round of the conference tournament.
