West Side Comes Back to Top Taconic

PITTSFIELD , Mass. – The West Springfield baseball team Monday rallied late to beat Taconic, 3-2.

 

Monday's matchup turned into a pitcher’s duel between Taconic’s Quentin Christopher and West Side’s Peter Greenia.

 

Greenia took the mound in relief in the third inning and allowed just two hits in four and a third innings of work, striking out seven to earn the win.

 

Christopher struck out seven in a complete-game effort, and the Terrirers scored three runs on the three hits he allowed.

 

The Thunder took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on Damon Pause’s two-run home run, but the pitchers took over from there until the seventh.

 

That is when West Springfield’s Nik Dwyer hit an RBI double deep to left center to tie the game, 2-2.

 

One batter later, Patrick Herlihy drove in the go-ahead run with a bunt single.

 

“Anytime you can face a team [Taconic] like that, it is always due to be a fun game and competitive, in the seventh inning I feel like it all clicked for them with an RBI double pinch hit really got the dugout going,” West Springfield coach Garrett Kendziera said.

 

“We have lost a few games toward the end of the game recently, so we have been really focusing on closing the game out strong overall, they get really excited to face good competition like Taconic.”

 

Taconic threatened a few times by putting runners on base with six walks but could not cash in.

 

Eddie Ferris led the Thunder’s offense, going 3-for-3 with a walk.

 

Taconic (7-3) will go on the road to face Pope Francis on Wednesday.
