Mount Everett Can't Overcome Early Deficit on Road
SUTTON, Mass. -- The Sutton baseball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead and hung on for a 5-2 win over Mount Everett on Monday in the Division 5 State Tournament.
"Sutton came out swinging in the first inning," Mount Everett coach Dan Lanoue said. "A walk followed by two singles put Sutton up by one. Then a ground out to second scored another run followed by a ground out to first scoring the third run of the inning."
The Eagles battled back in the next frame.
Hunter DeGrenier was hit by a pitch and Michael Ullrich worked a walk ahead of Matt Lowe's RBI single.
Ullrich then scored the team's second run on a double steal.
But Sutton took advantage of a defensive miscue in the fifth to tack on two more runs, and pitcher Josh Jenkins kept the Eagles off the board the rest of the way.
DeGrenier went the distance on the mound for Mount Everett (14-8), striking out six.
