Barbeau Bats McCann to First Victory
WESTFIELD, Mass — The McCann Tech baseball team put in its most complete game of the season so far, resulting in a 14-2 road win over Westfield Voc. on Monday.Senior outfielder Steven Barbeau had a stellar day at the plate to lead the Hornets, going a perfect 4 for 4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. McCann (1-2) scored three runs in the top of third inning and busted out for 11 more runs in the top of the fourth to give new head coach Pat Ryan his first win at the school.
Ryan had to like the way his team was swinging the bats on a day when the Hornets collected 11 hits in all. Junior infielder Chad Raimer had a 2-for-3 performance with two runs batted in, while classmate TJ Therrien added an RBI triple. More importantly, McCann didn't make a single error on defense the entire game.
"We have been staying aggressive with the bats," Ryan said. "Mike Chappell, Zach Tatro and Kyle Crosier had great outings, all throwing strikes and tallying up nine total strikeouts on the day."
All three Hornets' pitchers combined to allow just four hits on the afternoon. Tatro earned the win, striking out one batter and walking four in just under three innings of work. Chappell struck out five batters with zero walks in his two innings on the rubber, while Crosier closed the game out surrendering two unearned runs over the final two and one-thirds innings of the game.
Four different Tigers took the mound for Westfield, with starter Eddie Bartis only lasting into the top of the third. McCann next hosts Franklin Tech at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
