NORTH ADAMS, Mass — The McCann Tech baseball team is showing good signs early in the season, but an incomplete performance on Thursday afternoon led to the Hornets' second straight loss, an 8-4 defeat to Dean Tech at Joe Wolfe Field.

Pat Ryan's squad got a solid start out of junior pitcher TJ Therrien, who struck out seven batters in five and one-thirds inning of work. McCann (0-2) trailed just 2-1 entering the top of the fifth, when Therrien hit a wall and walked the bases loaded with one out. Freshman Sean Davis came on in relief and induced a routine fly ball to left field, which fell through for a three-run error. Therrien and Davis combined to allow just six hits on the day, but seven walks and two costly errors allowed Dean to score five unearned runs.

The Golden Hawks added three more runs in the top of the seventh before the hosts kept the game going with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Jan Diaz picked up the win for the Dean, combining with reliever Pedro Sanabria to hold the Hornets to five hits on the day. Senior catcher Nate Gutmann led McCann on offense, going 2 for 3 with one RBI and two stolen bases. Senior Zach Tatro added a triple and a run scored, while Davis and Chad Raimer each collected one RBI apiece.

The Hornets next play at Westfield Voc. at 4 p.m. on Monday.
