Baseball Tournament Seeds are Announced
The Monument Mountain and Drury baseball teams earned the top two seeds in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament.
As a reward, the Spartans and Blue Devils hold two of the three byes in a 13-team team tourney that gets under way on Thursday.
Top-seeded Monument Mountain (15-3) awaits the winner of Thursday's game in Dalton between No. 8 Wahconah (10-10) and No. 9 Frontier (12-8).
No. 2 Drury (14-6) also could face a Berkshire County foe in the quarters. It is slotted to meet the winner of Thursday's meeting between No. 10 Mahar (12-8) and No. 7 Mount Greylock (14-6) in Williamstown.
Five of the 13 teams in the D3 field hail from Berkshire County. The fifth, No. 11 Hoosac Valley (9-9) heads east on Friday to face No. 6 Greenfield (14-6).
In Division 3, four county teams qualified, though none gets a home game in the first round of the 16-team tournament.
The closest to the top half of the draw is No. 9 Lenox (8-12), which travels to meet No. 8 Ware (9-9). No. 10 Lee (8-12) gets a date with No. 7 Westfield Voc (13-5).
No. 15 McCann Tech (11-9) starts its tourney run at No. 2 Gateway (12-8). While 16th-seeded St. Joseph opens at No. 1 Smith Academy (11-7).
Berkshire County's entries in the Division 1 field will be cut in half on Thursday when No. 10 Taconic (13-7) meets No. 7 Pittsfield (15-5) at Clapp Park. The winner of that game will face No. 2 Westfield (15-5) in the quarter-finals.
