WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – It did not feel like baseball weather, but it felt good for the Mount Greylock baseball team to get on the field on Wednesday afternoon.
Jameson Bayliss went 4-for-4 with four RBIs at the plate and struck out eight hitters in three innings on the mound to lead the Mounties to a 19-4 win over Granby in the season-opener on Steve Messina Field.
“It is kind of nice to finally get outside and actually have a baseball game on the field,” Mount Greylock coach Rick Paris said. “I mean, we’ve been lucky enough to get out here for two days anyway before this.
“It would have been nice to play yesterday. It was nice yesterday,” he added with a laugh.
On Wednesday, the Mounties and Rams avoided the worst from Mother Nature by getting off the field just as the rain and sleet was starting to fall after the two coaches agreed to end it after four innings.
Mount Greylock made the most of its three turns at bat, breaking the game wide open with a nine-run second inning that pushed the lead to 13-1.
Bayliss, meanwhile, pitched around a couple of infield singles and six walks – including four to force in a Granby run in the top of the second.
“J-Mo was battling up there,” Paris said of the senior pitcher. “He was missing by small amounts. So it’s a good outing for him just to get out there and get his arm loose and get the feel going into the season. It was kind of a good opening game just to get him going.”
Cam Miller finished things off in the fourth, allowing a couple of hits and three runs but ending the game with a strikeout to leave a runner on base.
Miller also had a big impact on offense going 1-for-3 with a two-run double that helped break the game wide open in the second.
Prior to that blast, Mount Greylock was getting it done with walks and aggressive base-running.
“I thought our guys were really patient at the plate,” Paris said. “And then as we got later on, I brought in some of the younger guys and they were aggressive. They weren’t afraid to swing the bats.
“And they were putting the barrel on the ball, so I was very happy with that.”
Back in the first, the first four hitters reached base and scored for Mount Greylock.
Everett Bayliss and Mason Canata each walked. “E-Bay” stole second, moved up on a passed ball and scored the game’s first run on a double-steal with Canata going to second and taking third on the throw home.
Jameson Bayliss then drove in Canata with a single up the middle to make it 2-0. Jameson stole second, moved to third on Jake Newberry’s infield single and scored on a wild pitch. Newberry, who had stolen second already, went to third on that wild pitch and scored on another pitch that got to the backstop to make it 4-0.
In the second, two walks and a couple of Granby errors brought two runs home and put two runners in scoring position for Miller, who roped a two-bagger into left field to make it 8-0.
Jameson Bayliss had another RBI single before the inning was over with Mount Greylock ahead, 13-0.
The six-run third saw Canata and Jameson Bayliss each drive in a run with a single, Newberry hit a bases-clearing double and Cole Wetherell smack an RBI triple.
Mount Greylock (1-0) is scheduled to go right back at it on Thursday with a trip to Lenox to take on the Millionaires.
