PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Jason Codey and Morrie Fried led Pittsfield past Longmeadow, 11-2, on Opening Day Wednesday at Buddy Pelerin Field.

“I really felt good today, having the first game out of the way really feels good,” PHS junior Morrie Fried said.

“We knew that this Longmeadow team was good, and we played our best today. I’m happy with the outcome and look forward to Friday.

Fried had two hits in four at bats Wednesday including a early-inning basehit scoring his team’s sixth run of the game.

Codey took the bump on Wednesday, going five total innings with four strikeouts and three hits resulting in two earned runs.

Those two earned runs came from Longmeadow’s Jayden Leveille with two doubles and two RBIs.

One of those RBIs made it a 3-1 game midway through third.

It was 5-1, Pittsfield, when the Generals scored four runs in the fourth on three base hits.

Codey helped give himself some insurance in the fifth, drilling a line drive to the right center field gap to score Matt Egan.

“It was good to come out quickly hitting,” Pittsfield coach Drew Pearce said. “Codey had a great day on the mound as we expected going into this game.

“We took advantage on some of Longmeadow’s mistakes tonight, which elevated our confidence from a good team like themselves.”

Pittsfield lost some key players from last year’s run to the state finals and will be looking for Codey to again come up big on the mound.

The Generals (1-0) travel to Chicopee Comp Friday for their first away game of the season.

Longmeadow (0-1) will be facing Pope Francis Prep at home on Friday.
