BOYLSTON, Mass. – Jameson Bayliss struck out seven in a complete-game effort on the mound, and Cam Miller drove in the winning run in the top of the sixth to give the Mount Greylock baseball team a 3-2 win over seventh-seeded Tahanto in the Division 5 State Tournament on Tuesday.

 

“Jamo Bayliss pitched his first complete seven-inning game in his high school career, and what a time to do it,” Mount Greylock coach Rick Paris said. “Our defense worked great behind him today.

 

There was a huge pivotal play in the sixth inning and a runner on second and one out. There was a hard ground ball up over second base and Mason [Canata] ranged a long way to throw an off-balance throw to first to a stretched out Cam Miiler, who picked it to get the second out and keep the runner at third. Then Jamo was able to induce a pop up to end the inning.”

 

Bayliss allowed just three hits to earn the win on the mound.

 

Canata, Miller and Everett Bayliss each had a pair of hits in an eight-hit attack for the Mounties.

 

Mount Greylock struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first.

 

Canata led off with a single, stole second and scored on Tommy Art’s line drive single to right to make it 1-0.

 

Art then stole second, and, with two out, he came home when Cole Wetherell reached on an error.

 

Tahanto got one run back in the bottom of the inning and another run in the fourth to tie it, 1-1.

 

Mount Greylock then mounted a two-out rally in the sixth to take the lead for good.

 

Wetherell started things with a line drive to center field, and then he stole second to get into scoring position.

 

Miller drove a ball to center to drive in Wetherell, and Jameson Bayliss made the one-run lead stand up.

 

He retired Tahanto in order in the bottom of the sixth and worked around a single and a walk in the seventh, ,ending the game with a swinging third strike with the tying and winning runs in scoring position.

 

“These guys are finally believing in themselves and understanding what it means to win, and I can see the hunger in their eyes that was not there all year,” Paris said. “This is huge for our team and our program moving forward.”

 

No. 26 Mount Greylock (9-13) travels to play No. 23 Bourne on Wednesday. Bourne also was an upset winner in the Round of 32, knocking off No. 10 Westport, 6-3.
