Lenox Boys, Monument Mountain Girls Secure League Titles in Season Finale

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – It was a bittersweet night for many of the county’s top downhill skiers on Monday as they enjoyed perfect conditions at Bousquet Mountain and had to bid adieu to high school league racing on Senior Night.

 

“It’s really amazing to see all the volunteers, all of my coaches from the past, all be here tonight and come out here to support me,” Lenox’s Max Digrgoli said. “It’s a really amazing thing. A lot of athletes congratulating me. It was really a special experience. I really enjoyed it.”

 

Digrogoli and his Lenox teammates wrapped up a league championship with a first-place showing in the season finale.

 

But Pittsfield’s Charlie Heimann edged Digrigoli for the top time in Monday’s giant slalom and finished the season as the league’s top-ranked boy after taking first in three of the league’s six events and earning 98 season points to Digrigoli’s 97.

 

It was a similar story in the girls competition, where Madison DiGrigoli won individual season honors as the league’s top racer, but the team league championship went to Paige Lussier and the Monument Mountain Spartans.

 

On Monday, Madison Digrigoli placed first for the fourth time this year, earning 99 season points to finish atop the leaderboard. She edged teammate Molly Knight by three points for first in the  season individual standings.

 

Lussier placed third in the individual race for the year, but her Spartans won on Monday night to wrap up the team title for the season by a three-point margin ahead of Lenox.

 

On Monday, Lussier, Emma Soule, Abbey Boyd and Olivia Ruggiero finished fourth through seventh respectively, to lead the Spartans to the win.

 

Pittsfield’s Grace Ungewitter placed second in Monday’s GS, in between Digrigoli and Knight, to help the Generals finish second on the night but still a point behind runner-up Lenox for third place in the team season standings.

 

The boys race Monday saw racers from four different teams finish in the top four.

 

Behind Heimann and Digrigoli in first and second, Monument Mountain’s Justin Beadell placed third, and Wahconah’s Mitchell Scalise finished fourth.

 

After that, Lenox’s Rocco Piretti and Noah Kirby were fifth and sixth, and Oliver Kirby placed ninth to give the Millionaires four racers in the top 10.

 

That kind of dominance enabled Lenox to win the team battle for the third straight week and earn a convincing season points victory by a margin of 57-49 over Wahconah and Monument Mountain, who tied for second.

 

“We had a good year,” Max Digrigoli said. “We worked through some mental problems with struggling with some finishing early on in the season. But we really hit our groove toward the end of the season.

 

“We’re obviously very disappointed that some of the Wahconah athletes were injured [and could not race on Monday]. Our hearts go out to them. Those guys have the utmost respect from all of us. They were all out here tonight. They are model citizens for the ski community, and it was great to see them out there.

 

“But, overall, I’m really proud of our team.”

 

The league season may have come to an end on Monday, but the high school season continues into next month with the state championship scheduled for Tuesday, March 1, at Wachusett.
