WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Most of the girls who ran the 4-kilometer course at Mount Greylock on Wednesday spent most of their day chasing a girl wearing the maroon and gold of Lenox.

It is a feeling that Western Massachusetts harriers just may have to get used to for the next couple of years.

"About 85 percent if not more are returning runners," Lenox coach Jeanne Teasdale said on Wednesday. "We don't have any seniors."

But the Millionaires have plenty of speed.

Lenox's girls dominated the six-team competition with the top four places and five of the top six. Emma Jourdain led the way with a time of 16 minutes, 19 seconds, a full 33 seconds better than her teammate and runner up Emily Tibbetts.

On the boys' side, Ace McAlister held off Lenox's Tucker McNinch for individual honors. McAlister finished in 13:10, one second better than McNinch.

But McNinch's performance led a trio of Millionaires in the top 10 that helped go 2-0 dual meet with wins over Hoosac Valley and Mount Greylock.

Lenox's girls went 3-0 on the afternoon, beating Hoosac, Greylock and Taconic.Wahconah also competed at the event.

"These are all Northern Division teams," Teasdale said. "It was split this week with the Southern Division teams going to Lee and the Northern Division teams coming here. It's a good indicator, maybe, of how it will progress.

"I just said [to the team], we're not going to rest on our laurels. This is a good day and a good victory, but we know that these other teams will come back at the next meet, later in the season. We'll be faced with them again, and these schools like Mount Greylock, Monument, Hoosac, Wahconah, they all have really, really great coaches and good programs.

"We know we'll be faced with that competition week to week."

The first non-Lenox girl to cross the finish line on Wednesday was from host Mount Greylock. Margo Smith finished in 17:29 to finish fifth overall and help the Mounties go 2-1 in dual meet competition.

Mount Greylock fell to Lenox, 16-40, but defeated Wahconah and Monument Mountain by scores of 15-50 and 19-40, respectively.

Lenox's other two girls wins came by scores of 15-48 against Hoosac and 15-50 against Taconic. Monument edged Hoosac, 25-32, in the day's other dual.

Lenox's boys beat Hoosac, 25-34, and Greylock, 24-31. Greylock notched wins over Taconic, 20-41, and Monument, 20-40. Monument, meanwhile, got narrow 27-32 win over Hoosac, and Wahconah beat Taconic, 23-33.

The exciting finish in the boys race saw McAlister withstand McNinch's charge at the end despite finishing the race in pain.

"It wasn't my greatest day," McAlister said. "I got a cramp right with a half a mile left. My hamstring was in pain.

"I was just going as hard as I could even though my hamstring was bothering me. I didn't want to give up, even though I was in pain. I just wanted to finish strong."
