Lenox Girls Edge Mount Greylock, Mounties Sweep Individual Titles at County Meet
LENOX, Mass. -- Lenox senior Maggie Sorrentino edged out a Mount Greylock finisher by two seconds for a ninth-place finish that made all the difference in the team race at Saturday's Berkshire County Championships.
Sorrentino, in her final competitive event on her home course, crossed the finish line in 20 minutes, 57.95 seconds -- just ahead of Mount Greylock eighth-grader Ainsley Abel (20:59.99).
Those two seconds equaled one point in the standings and allowed the Millionaires to finish first with 38 points, just ahead of Mount Greylock's 39.
The Mounties swept the top of the individual podiums on a windy, rainy morning that the runners will long remember.
Mount Greylock freshman Josephine Smith won the girls race in 19:49.51, pulling ahead of Lenox's Ellen Huth (19:57.71) and Grace Elliot after running a tight pack with the two Millionaires for most of the race.
On the boys side, Mount Greylock's Jesse Seid and Josh Cheung broke ahead of the field early, and Seid pulled away late to take first in 17:26.83, 26 seconds ahead of his teammate, Cheung (17:52.99).
Mount Greylock also took third place in the boys race, as seventh-grader Oliver Swabey came home in 18:18.57, seven seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Led by the 1-2-3 finish, Mount Greylock's boys won the team title with 31 points.
Taconic's boys placed second with 80 points, paced by Brandon Pelkey, who placed sixth in 18:37.59.
