Pittsfield Senior Swimmers Celebrate in Style
PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Pittsfield High School swim team’s Class of 2017 went out in style on Friday, earning commanding wins over New Lebanon in the girls and boys meets on Senior Day at the Boys & Girls Club.
There is still plenty of swimming left this winter, especially for the Generals’ top performers. But the final home meet of the winter gave coach Tim Mazzer a chance to acknowledge five boys who made quite a splash at PHS.
“Four years ago, this group of five seniors came along to a program that was struggling with numbers,” Mazzer said. “Unfortunately, that’s been a trend.
“The only team they haven’t been able to beat in the last four years is Monument Mountain. That’s pretty impressive. Hopefully, we’ll get five freshmen next year to replace them.”
Lucas Godwin, Evan Dempsey and Greg Fournier each picked up individual wins in their final home meet, with Fournier and Godwin winning two races apiece.
Godwin continued his usual success in the 100-yard backstroke, which he won in 1 minute, 1.56 seconds, and he qualified for Western Mass with a second-place showing behind Fournier in the 200 freestyle. Fournier won in 2:01.66, Godwin finished in 2:04.53.
Fournier also won the 500 freestyle in 5:38.84. Dempsey won the 100 free in :59.44.
Pittsfield also got wins from Hayden Plouffe and Liam Mooney. Plouffe won the 50 free in :26.58. Mooney won an uncontested 100 butterfly in 1:00.27.
New Lebanon’s Jeffrey Miller won the 100 breaststroke in 1:23.91. The Tigers did not field a boys quartet in the relays as Pittsfield went on to a 64-9 win.
The Pittsfield girls won, 64-30, behind two wins apiece from Szofia Lewis and Jordan Bradford.
Lewis won the 200 individual medley in 2:26.24 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.66. Bradford won the 200 free (2:13.25) and the 500 free (6:04.81).
Pittsfield’s girls also got wins from Norah Miller in the 50 free (:28.91) and Abby Marsh in the 100 free (1:02.45).
The Generals took two out of the three relays: the 200 medley relay in 2:11.81 to open the meet and the 200 free relay in 2:00.41.
Lindsay Smith, Allison Ryder, Catherine Roden and Gigi French combined to win the 400 free relay for New Lebanon with a time of 4:31.54. Smith won the 100 butterfly in 1:15.70, and Ryder won the 100 back in 1:12.50.
Both teams will be in action next Saturday at the Berkshire County Individuals meet at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington.
