Pittsfield Girls Win, Boys Pile Up Individual Wins Against Pats
PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Kiera Devine and Jackie Roccabruna each won a pair of events Friday to lead the Pittsfield girls swim team to a 57-34 win over Mount Anthony at the Boys and Girls Club.
Devine won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 13.90 seconds, and the 500 freestyle in 5:51.50 as the Generals completed a season sweep of the Patriots.
Roccabruna won the 50 freestyle (27.18) and 100 free (59.25).
In the boys meet, Mount Anthony earned a 39-18 win over Pittsfield, which had just three competitors but won all four contested races. Asa Chard won the 200 IM (2:34.01) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.31), while James Swanton won the 50 free (26.21) and 500 free (6:31.59).
Pittsfield's girls won all but two races, including two of the three relays.
Riley Steinman won the 100 butterfly (1:11.59), and Emily Bradford won the 100 breaststroke (1:22.35).
Devine, Roccabruna and Bradford each already have punched their tickets for next month's Western Massachusetts sectional tournament, but the team has its eyes set on picking up some state qualifying marks in the next couple of weeks, coach Jim Harrington said.
Unfortunately, a this turned out to be a tough week for the Generals to burnish their credentials.
"We've been working really hard, and we were kind of up for a Monument meet on Tuesday," Harrington said. "It got canceled, and I think we kind of ... We were hoping some of these races were going to be closer. When we swam them the last time, we had some close races.
"It just happened that both coaches, I think, tried to swim their better swimmers thinking [the opponents] were going to be somewhere else."
A more competitive race lends itself to the kind of time drops Pittsfield is looking for.
"We didn't get those head-to-head things we were hoping for," Harrington said. "So we're looking forward to Monument. We're looking forward to another Taconic meet, where the girls will get some close, head-to-head competition.
"It's hard to get cuts alone with half a length of pool difference."
Even if the Generals did not move the needle on times, it was a productive day, Harrington said.
"I saw a lot of really good technique things today that we've been working on in practice," he said. "So they've been carrying that over into the pool."
