Cormier, Schoonmaker Lead Monument Wrestlers to Fourth Place at Mountie Invite

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Nate Cormier and Shamal Schoonmaker earned individual titles Saturday to lead the Monument Mountain wrestling team to a fourth-place finish at the 25th annual Mountie Invitational at Mount Greylock.
 
Cormier pinned three opponents on his way to the finals, where he defeated Otter Valley, Vt.’s, Tyson Cram, 10-6, at 145 pounds.
 
Schoonmaker pinned Chariho’s John Dougherty in the first minute of their 195-pound final.
 
That decision ended up deciding the team championship.
 
Rhode Island’s Chariho finished with 195 points to end up a half point behind team champion LaSalle Institute of New York. Another Albany area team, Colonie, finished third with 143 points.
 
Monument Mountain garnered 133 points to place fourth ahead of fifth-place Taconic (128.5) and seventh-place host Mount Greylock (91.5). The other county team, Mount Everett, placed 11th out of 20 schools with 51.5 points.
 
In addition to Cormier and Schoonmaker, two more Spartans reached the championship final, and two reached the consolation bracket finals.
 
Caleb Pollard was pinned in the first minute of the title match at 106 pounds. Sam Cormier lost, 12-2, to La Salle’s Jordan Zaecheski in the final at 120.
 
At 170 pounds, Monument’s Steven Wool lost his second match of the day but won four straight in the consolation bracket, taking third place in the tourney with a 10-4 win over Chariho’s Max Duscha.
 
Spartan Curtin Wilton was edged by Northampton’s Noah Brink, 7-4, in the consolation final at 126 pounds.
 
Taconic placed four wrestlers in the championship finals, where Isiah Williams battled to a 2-1 victory over Southwick’s Miguel Gonzalez at 152 pounds. Williams started the day with a couple of quick pins before going the distance for a 6-1 win in the semi-finals.
 
Taconic’s Zabion Powell (132), Dylan Burke (160) and Teyler Heistand (220) each reached the title match. Burke was edged, 6-3, in his final against Hampshire Regional’s D.J. Willard.
 
Mount Greylock’s Devin Pelletier pulled away from La Salle’s Anthony Altomer in the third period of a 10-3 win in the 170-pound final. Pelletier reached the final with a pair of pins and a technical fall.
 
Mount Greylock had one other finalist: Robert Sutter at 126 pounds. The top-seeded Sutter had two pins and a shutout before running into La Salle’s Nick Pino, who registered a pin with five seconds left in the match.
 
Liam Bradley reached the consolation final for the Mounties at 100 pounds.
 
Bradley was knocked out of the championship bracket in the second round by Mount Everett’s Zack Lupiani, who went on to win a championship for the Eagles.
 
Lupiani got an 18-2 tech fall against La Salle’s Johnny Whalen in the championship match.
 
The Eagles, who entered just five wrestlers, sent three to the championship or consolation finals. In the consys, Mount Everett got third place finishes from Anthony Lupiani at 113 and Pat Fosby at 120.
