Monument Girls Swim to Fifth at State Meet
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Senior Maeve Wilber finished second in two individual events and swam on a second-place relay quartet to lead the Sparatans to a fifth-place finish at the MIAA Division 1 swimming and diving championships at MIT last weekend.
Wilber placed second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 9.89 seconds, just behind King Philip Regional's Emily McQuaid in 2:08.12.
In the 100 backstroke, Wilber swam a time of 58.62 but was edged for first by Beverly's Astrid Swenson (57.07).
Wilber, Rowan Rice, Emma Wilber and Caroline Bissaillon teamed up to place second in the 200 medley relay (1:50.73). Swenson and Beverly won the event in 1:49.41.
Beverly finished second in the team standings with 221 points. It was edged by Lincoln Sudbury with 223. Monument was fifth out of 39 teams with 131 points.
The Spartans placed fifth in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:43.82. Lincoln Sudbury was first in 3:33.33.
Emma Wilber and Bissaillon turned in a pair of ninth-place finishes for Monument.
In the 100 butterfly, Emma Wilber, a sophomore, was one of nine swimmes to break a minute, finishing in 59.62, a half second better than her seed time but behind first-place Swenson (56.19).
In the 100 free, Bissaillon swam a time of 55.22 to finish ninth in an event won by Algonquin's Dorian McMenemy in a meet-record time of 50.69.
Emma Wilber also placed 11th in the 200 IM, an event in which Rice also scored for the Spartans with a 15th-place finish.
Bissallion was 11th in the 50 free. Rice was 14th in the 100 breaststroke.
