The Massachusetts High School Bowling State Tournament Committee Thursday decided to declare Monument Mountain and St. John’s of Shrewsbury co-champions for the 2024-25 season.

Last weekend in Chicopee, the Spartans won a best-of-three title match at the conclusion of the state tournament. But an illegal substitution by the Spartans in the second game, which Monument Mountain won, put the result of the match into doubt.

After consulting the U.S. Bowling Congress, the governing body for the sport, earlier this week, the tournament committee was advised to make a decision on how to adjudicate the disputed match.

“Therefore, we the … committee rule the second game won by Monument be null and void since Monument won [that game], 189-181, therefore leaving the teams tied at one leading to co-champions for 2025,” the committee said in a release to the media and both teams.
