Monument Mountain's Kline Dominates at Individuals Meet

But if they did, Monument Mountain’s Keaghan Kline would have won in a runaway.
Kline won a pair of individual events and swam anchor on two winning relays, picking up a gold medal each time she entered the pool at the eight-team event at Hudson High School.
Kline ended the first half of the meet with a win by 16-hundredths of a second over Mount Anthony’s Emily Tibbetts in the 50-yard freestyle.
She started the second half by winning the 100 butterfly by more than five seconds over Mount Anthony’s Lucy Poole.
“I really like butterfly,” said Kline, who finished sixth in the event at the Division 2 State Championships last winter. “I feel most accomplished with the butterfly. It hurts a lot, but it feels good when I work hard, so it works out well.”
Kline ended the day by anchoring the Spartans to a victory in the 4-by-100 free relay. In between, she closed out a victory in the 4-by-50 relay that saw the Spartans edge top-seeded Mount Anthony by more than three seconds in one of the day’s few upsets.
Monument Mountain’s girls took home six golds from the meet’s 11 events. Adalyn Shufelt won the 200 individual medley, and Annabel Holmes won the 100 free.
“Everyone’s been working extremely hard, so I think everyone’s really happy about the results,” Kline said of the Spartans’ day.
Mount Anthony of Bennington, Vt., traveled the farthest of any team and took home the second biggest medal haul in the girls meet,
The Patriots collected four golds and nine medals total as Poole (200 free), Driscoll (500 free) and Tibbetts (100 back) touched first as individuals. Poole and Tibbetts each swam a leg on Mount Anthony’s winning medley relay quartet.
The only girls gold not won by Mount Anthony or MAU was in the day’s final individual event, where Wahconah’s Emily Capogna beat the field by just less than a second.
The Monument Mountain and Mount Anthony boys finished tied in the gold medal count, with each team taking four.
They also had the day’s only other multiple winners in individual events.
Monument Mountain’s David Iusco won the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Vincent Dragonetti gave the Spartans a win in the 200 free, and each swam a leg on the team’s winning 200 relay quartet.
Mount Anthony’s Braeden McManus’ program mirrored Kline’s, as he touched first in the 50 free and 100 fly. He also anchored the Patriots’ winning 4-by-100 relay to close the meet.
New Lebanon-Berlin took the medley relay gold to open the boys meet and got an individual win from George Lamphere-Webster in the 200 IM.
Pittsfield’s Joseph Kearns gave the Generals a gold in the 100 freestyle.
The league’s Massachusetts schools now turn their attention to next week’s Central/Western Mass sectional meets at Springfield College.
“We’re just going to be more careful with our swimming to make sure we don’t do anything to get injured so we’re in our best shape for the meets coming up,” Kline said.
