Haskins-Vaughan Seeded First at All-State Meet

FITCHBURG, Mass. -- More than a dozen Berkshire County student-athletes have qualified for the Massachusetts Track and Field Meet of Champions, which gets underway on Thursday at Fitchburg State.
 
Monument Mountain's Lily Haskins-Vaughan, after clearing 5 feet, 7 inches at last week's Division 5 State Championships, is seeded first in the event at the all-state event.
 
Six girls at the meet have gone over 5-6 this spring, including Mount Greylock's Chase Hoey.
 
The state champion Mount Greylock girls send eight competitors to the two-day meet that concludes on Saturday.
 
Maggie Nichols is seeded 11th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.40 seconds, about a second behind favorite Sarah Claflin of Division 4 Pembroke.
 
Nichols also is entered in the 100, where she is ranked 27th in a 34-girl field.
 
Her teammate Katherine Goss is entered in three events as an individual: the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles and the triple jump.
 
Goss and Nichols also are listed as possible competitors on Mount Greylock's 4-by-100 relay quartet, along with Maire Scanlon, Lily McDermott, Rowan Apotsos and Madison Powell.
 
Mountie Nora Lopez qualified in the javelin throw.
 
The top-seeded Berkshire County boy at the Meet of Champions is Wahconah's Payton Shippee.
 
The Wahconah senior is seeded sixth in the javelin with a mark of 172-4. Matthew St. Cyr of D3 Walpole is seeded first after throwing 190-1 this spring.
 
Shippee is seeded seventh in the discus with a mark of 169-4; Alexander Fitzsimmons of D2 Arlington is the favorite at 178-3.
 
Monument Mountain's boys have three entrants in the meet: Everett Pacheco in the mile, Sean Scarbro in the high jump and Oliver Berkowitz in the long jump.
 
Taconic's Elijah Harewood qualified in the 100, and Pittsfield's Owen Klatka is in the field in the high jump.
 
The Mount Greylock boys, who joined the girls at the top of the podium at the Western Mass meet two weeks ago, send three individuals and one relay to the high school season finale.
 
Jenner Kittle and Judge Martin join Berkshire rival Shippee in the javelin competition. Kittle is seeded 10th with a throw of 168-8.
 
Mount Greylock's Quinn McDermott qualified in the 800 meters and is one of the potential runners on the Mounties' 4-by-800 relay quartet.
 
In the girls meet, Monument Mountain's Haskins-Vaughan is joined by teammate Amelia Desilets, who qualified in the mile and 2-mile run.
 
Wahconah's Kathryn Perrone qualified in the 400 hurdles.
 
And Hoosac Valley has two entrants in the meet: Abby Scialabba is seeeded 12th in the javelin, and Taylor Garabedian qualified in the discus.
